“Today, the land of a thousand lakes has become the land of a thousand nudes”, summarizes Spencer Tunick. On Saturday, about a thousand naked people were gathered in the middle of the night on the streets and beaches of Kuopio, in central Finland, by the American plastic photographer.
Under the direction of the artist, famous for his completely nude shots of crowds, the participants, guided into the night by a loudspeaker, posed first in the street, around flowery installations, then on the beach and in the water.
“I wanted to align the body with Kuopio and the northern Finnish lakes,” the artist explained, expressing his deep appreciation for the volunteers ready to undress in the middle of the night.
“It’s a very rare thing to give the public the opportunity to participate in the creative process,” argued Spencer Tunick.
18,000 people, the record in Mexico
In November, some 2,500 people gathered nude on a famous beach in Sydney, Australia, as part of an installation by the same artist to raise awareness of skin cancer.
This event called “Strip Off for Skin Cancer” (“Strip off for skin cancer”) was organized in collaboration with an association that encourages Australians to be examined regularly by a dermatologist.
Spencer Tunick is known for his massive striptease staged in very famous places around the world. Most notably, he undressed more than 5,000 people in front of the Sydney Opera House in 2010 and 18,000 people – his record – in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s central square, in 2007.
