At least 33 people have died and ten are missing due to torrential rains in South Korea, according to a new balance released today by the authorities.
The previous balance pointed to 26 dead and 14 missing. The death toll is expected to rise, authorities say, as rescuers search for people trapped in a flooded underground tunnel.
In four days, torrential rains plunged many regions of the country into the height of the summer monsoon.
Most of the casualties were in North Gyeongsang province, where huge landslides in mountainous areas buried inhabited houses.
Several of the missing “were swept away” by the water when a river overflowed its banks in this region.
In the hardest-hit areas, “entire houses were leveled,” a rescue worker told South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
There are thousands of displaced people, road and electricity cuts in various regions of the country.
