The Supreme Electoral Court judge and president of Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court was the target of insults and attempted aggression, an incident already condemned on Saturday by government, parliamentary and opposition authorities.
According to the local press, Judge Alexandre de Moraes was subjected to insults and even attempts at physical assault on Friday by three Brazilians, who were at the airport of Rome, the city where a series of lectures.
In addition to serving on the Federal Supreme Court, Moraes presides over the Superior Electoral Court, the target of harsh criticism and threats from supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, whose political rights were revoked by the court for “abuse of power”. committed during the election campaign from 2022.
Luiz Inácio won Lula da Silva in that election, but Bolsonaro refused to recognize it and even hinted at alleged fraud.
Justice Minister Flávio Dino attributed what happened in Rome to “extremists” who “behave criminal behavior” and “believe they can do anything because they have money”.
Likewise, the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, considered these “hostile acts” as “unacceptable”, which “endanger the road to building a country of progress, civilized and peaceful”.
The incident was even criticized by pro-Bolsonaro politicians, such as Senator Rogério Marinho, former regional development minister in Jair Bolsonaro’s government.
According to Marinho, “harassment and physical violence are not instruments of political struggle”, but an “irrational form of manifestation that does not help” and that “turns against those who practice it”.
The former minister stated that “democratic normality must return to the country”, along with “pacification and dialogue”, to “live with differences”, which he considered part of the “backbone of democracy”.
