Fire on La Palma forces evacuation of 4,000 people

About 4,000 people have been evacuated from the island of La Palma, in Spain, because of a fire that got out of hand, authorities cited by the Efe agency revealed.

The fire, which started at dawn, hit the northwestern part of that island, in the Canary archipelago, has already burned 4,675 hectares in area and destroyed at least 13 houses, but there are no reports of injuries.

According to the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the fire was out of control during the afternoon of this Saturday, but many residents still resist leaving their homes.

There were about 360 operational personnel on the ground, supported by eleven air forces.

Simultaneously with the fire on La Palma, fires started on Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but on a smaller scale. The fire in Tenerife has already burned 60 hectares and forced the evacuation of 50 people and 200 animals. The fire in Gran Canaria is now under control.
