The official unemployment rate among urban youth in China (between 16 and 24 years old) reached a new all-time record in June, rising to 21.3%, according to data published this Monday by the National Statistics Office (GNE). .
The proportion of unemployed young people thus rises from the value of 20.8%, registered in May, marking a new maximum since the sub-index began to be counted, in 2018.
In June, the overall labor force unemployment rate was 5.2%, unchanged from May.
The GNE added that the urban unemployment rate in the first half of the year was 5.3% and that Beijing has set a goal of creating around 12 million new jobs in cities by 2023.
China has more than 96 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, of whom more than 33 million entered the labor market this year.
