Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa on Tuesday stressed “the consensus” at the European Union (EU) summit with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to express concern over the war in Ukraine, with the exception of Nicaragua.
“With the exception of Nicaragua, all countries, from Lithuania to Cuba, have agreed on a common text expressing their concern for Russia’s war against Ukraine, for a just and lasting peace and support for the initiative of the Secretary General of the United Nations.” to allow the transit of grains in the Black Sea, the Portuguese head of government declared.
In Brussels, on the sidelines of the EU-CELAC summit that ends this Tuesday after starting Monday and which was marked from the start by disagreements over the final statement, António Costa admitted the “very different points of view”, namely in the bloc Latin America, about the war in Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion.
“It was possible to reach an agreement between all countries […] for a joint text, with the exception of Nicaragua, which prevents a formal statement from the summit, but there will be a statement signed by two co-chairs that reflects an important effort of consensus among all,” the head of government reinforced.
