Las Vegas police searched a residence on Tuesday as part of their investigation into the nearly three-decade-old murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department “can confirm that a search warrant was issued Monday” in the neighboring western Nevada city of Henderson, a spokesman said in a statement to AFP.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that a residence had been searched.
In 1996, Tupac was killed in a Las Vegas shooting when he was just 25 years old. Those responsible for the crime were never found. Monday’s operation is “part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Tupac Shakur,” police added. “It’s an unsolved case and we hope we can find it one day,” Lieutenant Jason Johansson told the Review-Journal.
Tupac’s career was short-lived, but he quickly rose from dancer to self-proclaimed “rap gangster” and one of hip-hop’s most influential figures, selling 75 million records. He also became one of the exponents of the famous rivalry, encouraged by event organizers, between East and West Coast hip-hop. Although he was born in New York, Tupac moved with his family to California during his teenage years, becoming one of the most important names in the region’s music scene.
The circumstances of his death, in September 1996, have not yet been clarified, giving rise to a series of theories about what happened.
Tupac’s murder was followed six months later by the death of his rival, East Coast rapper Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G”. Many believe the two were killed as part of a rivalry between their record labels, Death Row in Los Angeles and Bad Boy Entertainment in New York. But some music historians argue that the dispute between the two coasts was exaggerated for commercial reasons.
Tupac Shakur used his lyrics to show the problems of black Americans ranging from police brutality to mass incarceration.
