The Australian Government has announced this Thursday that it has imposed sanctions on 35 Russian economic and strategic entities, as well as ten Russian and high-ranking Belarusian soldiers for supporting the invasion of Ukraine.
The sanctions affect several Russian companies that supply technology and equipment to the Russian Armed Forces and Russian entities involved in resource extraction and nuclear power in the Arctic, according to a statement issued by the Australian Foreign Office.
Several Russian entities in the defense sector were also sanctioned, including Russia’s largest producer of military helicopters, the statement said.
Those affected by the sanctions include Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dimitro Chernyshenko, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov, as well as military officers from Moscow’s ally Belarus who are believed to have contributed to the threat to Russia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine.
“Today’s sanctions underscore Australia’s commitment to working with its partners to keep up the pressure on Russia and those who support its illegal and immoral war,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in the statement.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Australia has sanctioned more than 1,100 individuals and entities supporting the invasion of Ukraine.
Australia is one of the non-NATO countries that helps Kiev the most in the acquisition of arms, ammunition and military vehicles, as well as humanitarian packages, for an amount of more than 790 million Australian dollars (481 million euros), according to official data.
