Netanyahu stable after pacemaker surgery

Benjamin Netanyahu was hospitalized overnight to have a “pacemaker” fitted, a small device to monitor and promote heartbeats, and, as reported this morning, Sheba Hospital “will remain under medical supervision with the cardiology service.”

News of the surgery comes about a week after Netanyahu was hospitalized for dehydration.

The 73-year-old prime minister was rushed on July 15 to Sheba Hospital, Israel’s largest hospital, located near Tel Aviv.

At the time, the head of the hospital’s cardiology department said in a video broadcast by his agency that the Israeli leader’s heart was “completely normal”.

“No arrhythmia was detected (…), we decided to place a subcutaneous Holter to continue monitoring,” the doctor said at the time.

Netanyahu was vacationing with his family at Lake Kineret in northern Israel when a heat wave hit the entire country.

In October last year, the prime minister was already hospitalized after feeling ill during the Yom Kippur fast, the holiest holiday on the religious calendar.

Benjamin Netanyahu, who won the November 2022 election, along with his allies from the ultra-Orthodox and far-right parties, is fighting internally against the ruthless opposition to the justice reform project championed by his administration.

The prime minister, among others, is accused of corruption in a number of cases.

Netanyahu denies the charges and considers himself the victim of a witch hunt.
