Netanyahu leaves hospital after inserting a pacemaker

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from hospital on Monday, a day after undergoing surgery to insert a pacemaker, the Sheba Medical Center announced.

Netanyahu left the hospital early in the morning, said a spokesman for the medical establishment, where the politician was admitted early Sunday to have a “pacemaker” fitted, a small device to monitor and promote heartbeat.

News of the surgery came about a week after Netanyahu was hospitalized for dehydration.

The 73-year-old prime minister was rushed to Sheba Hospital, the largest in Israel, near Tel Aviv on July 15.

In October last year, the prime minister was already hospitalized after feeling ill during the fast of Yom Kippur, the holiest holiday on the Jewish religious calendar.

Benjamin Netanyahu, who won the November 2022 elections, is fighting internally with allies from the ultra-Orthodox and far-right parties against the ruthless opposition to the justice reform project championed by the government.

The prime minister, among others, is accused of corruption in a number of cases.

Netanyahu has refuted the allegations and considered himself the victim of a witch hunt.
