German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius assured this Monday that he wants to give “maximum priority” to the purchase of ammunition for the armed forces, in the investment of one billion euros for purchases this year.
“Until 2031, we must and want to invest more than 20,000 million euros in ammunition,” Pistorius explained in statements to the German newspaper ‘Der Spiegel’.
The ‘Bundestag’ – the lower house of the German parliament – in June approved several contracts worth several billion euros for the purchase of ammunition for artillery pieces and tanks, intended to supply both the German and Ukrainian forces in the resistance to the Russian invasion.
The slowness of the requests drew harsh criticism of Pistorius’ predecessor, Christine Lambrecht, and the current minister was also questioned about the fact that the estimated €20 billion investment was not included in the special fund for the armed forces.
Days after the start of the war in Ukraine, in February last year, the German government approved a special fund worth €100 billion to better equip its armed forces.
