Moldova suspects that Russia has stepped up espionage activities in the country

Moldova suspects that Russian special services have intensified their activities in that former Soviet republic, following a proliferation of antennas to pick up long-range signals on the roof of the Russian embassy in Chisinau, reported by local media on Tuesday.

The Moldovan press reported that it was possible to detect 28 fixed antennas installed in the building of the Russian diplomatic mission.

“The majority, 13, are satellite dishes,” indicated the local ‘media’ Jurnal TV, who, however, pointed out and quoted specialists that there are also devices that make it possible to intercept mobile phone calls, data from ‘Wi-Fi’ networks and radio broadcasts.

According to the local press, the number of antennas at the Russian embassy in Chisinau is even higher than at the Russian delegation in Brussels, where there will be 17.

After the publication of this news, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova announced the recall of the Russian ambassador to Chisinau, Oleg Vasnetsov.

“The Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Chisinau will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify and explain the situation that has arisen,” the ministry said in a statement published on the Telegram platform.

“Depending on the evolution of the situation, the authorities of the Republic of Moldova will analyze different response options,” the same briefing added.

This month, Moldovan authorities also reported the dismantling of a network of agents carrying out espionage on behalf of Russia to destabilize the situation in the country.

Chisinau hosted a European Political Community (EPC) summit on June 1, bringing together the 27 countries of the European Union (EU) and more than a dozen neighboring countries.
