More than four million people have requested temporary protection from the European Union (EU) following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine between February 24, 2022 and June 30 of this year, Eurostat announced on Wednesday.
According to the European Statistical Service, Germany (1,133,420 people, that is, 28% of the total), Poland (977,740, 24%) and the Czech Republic (349,140, 9%) hosted the largest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection conferred by the 27.
A total of 4,065,615 citizens who do not belong to one of the EU countries have requested temporary protection as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has caused the largest migratory flow within the European continent since the Second World War, under from a decision in March last year that makes it possible while the war rages on Ukrainian soil.
As of June 30, 2023, Portugal had received 55,425 people.
