Denmark intercepts Russian bombers en route to NATO territory

The Danish air force intercepted two Russian bombers on their way to “NATO territory”, the Dutch air force reported on Monday.

The two Russian aircraft were on their way to the airspace monitored by the Netherlands on behalf of the Atlantic Alliance, Reuters reports.

Dutch F-16 fighters prepared to intercept the Russian bombers, which were eventually intercepted by the Danish Air Force before entering Dutch and NATO airspace.

The Danish Defense Ministry confirmed to Sky News that it has sent F-16s to identify and intercept Russian aircraft flying over the North Sea on Monday morning.

“The Russian aircraft was in international airspace and did not cross Danish airspace at any time,” the Danish defense ministry said.

A spokesman for the Dutch air force, quoted by Reuters, said it is not unusual for Russian aircraft to violate or approach the airspace of a European country.
