Former US President Donald Trump called the Georgia lawsuit, in which he was accused of conspiring to reverse the 2020 election defeat, “election interference.” [nas presidenciais de 2024] on behalf of the Democrats.”
Shortly after it was announced that the Republican had been indicted, Trump sent an email requesting fundraising for his 2024 presidential campaign.
In the message, the former president described the process as “the fourth act of electoral interference by the Democrats, in an attempt to keep the White House under the control of (…) Joe [Biden] and arresting his biggest opponent in the 2024 election.”
Trump’s legal team said the Georgia impeachment resulted from a “one-sided grand jury presentation” that “recruited witnesses who have their own personal and political interests.”
The trio of lawyers, Drew Findling, Jennifer Little and Marissa Goldberg, said they “wait for a detailed review of this indictment, which is arguably as flawed and unconstitutional as this entire process has been.”
Donald Trump was charged in Georgia on Monday with conspiring to unlawfully overturn his loss in the 2020 election in that US state.
This is the fourth criminal case against the former president and the second in which he is accused of trying to subvert the results of the vote.
The Fulton County grand jury’s indictment of Trump stems from a two-year investigation that began after a January 2021 phone call in which the then-president suggested the Georgia Republican secretary of state could help him “find the 11,780 votes” needed to reverse the loss of Democrat Joe Biden.
18 other defendants in the same lawsuit include former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and a Justice Department official in the Trump administration, Jeffrey Clark.
Trump was previously indicted in early August by a federal grand jury for conspiring to undermine the 2020 vote and impede the peaceful transfer of power through a series of lies and illegal actions taken after the general election that led to the violent riot. of his supporters at the United States Capitol, January 6, 2021.
