A former Brazilian military police officer convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to more than 200 years in prison for a 2015 massacre in Brazil was detained in New Hampshire, United States, on Monday, immigration authorities reported today.
António José de Abreu Vidal Filho, 29, was the target of an Interpol alert from the international criminal police organization after he was convicted of 11 murders and sentenced to nearly 276 years in prison in June, according to a statement from the Immigration and Customs Department of Boston.
The former agent was arrested Monday in Rye, New Hampshire, and will remain in custody pending his appearance before a federal immigration judge.
No further details were provided about how it was located in New Hampshire or its activities in that state.
Vidal Filho, along with three other military policemen, was convicted by a criminal court in Brazil of the murder of 11 people, three attempted murders and torture in the impoverished suburbs of Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará.
The suspect appeared for the trial remotely, after fleeing Brazil to the United States in 2019, according to Brazilian news portal G1.
In all, about 20 police officers are on trial for the massacre.
The crimes took place in November 2015, after the death of a police officer and in an act of revenge that came to be known as “Massacre do Curió”, the name of the Fortaleza neighborhood where they took place.
Interpol alerts are not an arrest warrant, but serve as a warning to an internationally wanted person and provide information to identify fugitive suspects or convicts of serious crimes who have fled prosecution or are serving their sentences.
