At least eight killed in Russian airstrike in Syria

At least eight anti-regime fighters were killed this morning during Russian airstrikes in a rebel area in northwestern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) announced on Monday.

“Russian warplanes carried out airstrikes on the western outskirts of the city of Idleb, targeting a military base…, killing at least eight fighters,” said OSDH director Rami Abdel Rahmane, with It is based in the UK and has an extensive network of sources in Syria.

A correspondent for news agency France-Presse (AFP) in Idlib said the attacks targeted an agricultural area in the region, the last major rebel stronghold in northwestern Syria, partly controlled by the Islamist group HTS.

Russia is the main supporter of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and has been intervening militarily in Syria since 2015.

On June 25, Russian strikes in northwestern Syria killed at least 13 people, including nine civilians.

With the support of Russia and Iran, the Syrian regime recovered most of the territory lost at the start of the war, triggered in 2011 by the repression of pro-democracy demonstrations.
