Death toll from mine explosion in central China rises to 11

The death toll caused by an explosion in a coal mine in Shaanxi province, in central China, has risen to 11, according to a new balance published Tuesday by the local press.

The accident occurred Monday night in Yanchuan Village, located in the city of Yan’an.

The previous balance reported seven deaths and four miners trapped inside the mine.

However, the rescue teams found the bodies of the four miners.

China relies predominantly on coal for power generation, but has made efforts to reduce the number of fatal mine accidents by placing greater emphasis on safety and closing smaller mines that lacked the necessary equipment.

Most of the deaths in this sector are attributed to explosions caused by the accumulation of methane and coal dust.

Work accidents in China are associated with several factors: lack of training and weak safety regulations, corruption, and a tendency to cut costs by companies seeking to maximize profits.

In 2015, two explosions at chemical facilities in the port area of the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin killed at least 165 people and caused extensive damage.
