The governments of South Africa and China issued a joint statement this Wednesday in which they again defended the implementation of constructive dialogue as the “only viable way out” to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
“Both sides (…) will seek reconciliation and advance the negotiation process” and are ready to “play a constructive role in a political solution”, refers to the communiqué issued by Beijing, within the framework of the Fifteenth BRICS Summit – Brazil , Russia, India, China and South Africa – takes place in Johannesburg.
In the statement, China and South Africa emphasized that they will work to “jointly protect the international system, with the United Nations at its core” and that they will defend “a just international order based on international law” as well as “the rights and interests of developing countries”, respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
South Africa – which leads a coalition of African countries -, China and also Brazil are among the states that have presented their own peace proposals in an attempt to initiate a process of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.
While welcoming all of them, Ukraine argued that any peace initiative should include the conditions laid out in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s plan, including Russia’s withdrawal from the territory, the transfer of occupied territories and the opening of war crimes trials . invasion.
