Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Wednesday that the counter-offensive by Ukrainian forces to recapture Russian-held territory is “very complicated” due to the density of minefields in Russia’s defense lines.
“It is very difficult for us, because the minefield is very dense,” Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, announcing a new military aid package for Ukraine of heavy weapons and ammunition.
“The Russians have laid thousands of mines, but the most important thing is the trends” observed on the ground, added Zelensky, who recalled that the Ukrainian army has not stopped advancing in the three areas of the front where it has since launched offensive actions executed. it began its counter-offensive in early June.
“The army informs me about the next trend: we are constantly moving forward,” the Ukrainian head of state said. “Yes, little by little, but we are moving in the right direction,” he stressed.
Kiev said on Tuesday that its forces had reached the town of Robotyne in southeastern Zaporijia province, from where Ukrainian troops are attempting to invade the occupied city of Melitopol with the aim of reaching the shores of the Sea of Azov.
Military spokesman Andri Kovalov said on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces continued their offensive actions on this front, including in captured positions and on the outskirts of Bakhmut, in the east of the country.
