Lula criticizes the UN Security Council for “promoting war instead of peace”

The president of Brazil criticized this Saturday the current configuration of the UN Security Council, considering that the body, instead of promoting world security and tranquility, “promotes war without talking to anyone”, defending reforms.

“We need to change the UN Security Council, it is very important. During the eight years that I was president, I spoke with Tony Blair, I spoke with Gordon Brown, I spoke with Angela Merkel, I spoke with Bush, I spoke with Obama, with Sarkozy “, with Chirac, that is, he spoke to the whole world about the need for a new Security Council,” said Lula da Silva, in Luanda.

For the Brazilian President, who was speaking today at a press conference summarizing his state visit to Angola, the current format of the United Nations Security Council “no longer responds to the objectives for which it was created.”

“The UN of 2023 is far from having the same credibility as the UN of 1945. The Security Council that should be the security of peace and tranquility is the Security Council that wages war without talking to anyone,” he said.

“Russia is going to Ukraine without discussing it in the Security Council, the United States is going to Iraq without discussing it in the Security Council, France and England are going to invade Libya without going through the Security Council,” he criticized.

According to Lula da Silva, the countries of the Security Council make war, the countries of the Security Council produce weapons and the countries of the Security Council sell weapons.

“And then it’s wrong,” he concluded.

In the opinion of the Brazilian head of state, it is necessary to understand that there are more countries that can be part of this body, especially in the African continent, Asia and Latin America.

“And we make it clear, we defend that Brazil enter the Security Council, we defend that India, Japan, Germany, Egypt, Nigeria enter so that we can have a geographical representation that is more in line with the current reality,” he defended.

Lula also spoke of “serious breaches” by the States of the recommendations of the World Climate Conferences: “We decided many things and none is fulfilled.”

“And we do not comply because there is no sovereign State, the UN does not have the strength to say that we have to comply with this here because otherwise there will be certain actions by the State that does not comply, it does not exist.” , he said.

Lula da Silva ends today his two-day state visit to Angola and travels on Sunday to Sao Tome and Principe, where he will participate in the 14th summit of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
