Storm on the Spanish Mediterranean coast causes damage and injuries

Spain’s Mediterranean coast, especially the Balearic Islands, was hit this Sunday by heavy rains and winds that caused several minor injuries, property damage and flight cancellations.

Wind gusts of up to 120 km/h and significant rainfall, including hail, hit the Balearic Islands, Catalonia (northeast) and the Valencian Community (east).

The National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has put these three regions on orange alert (high risk).

According to the Spanish press, several people were slightly injured.

The wind broke the moorings of a 330-meter tourist cruise ship docked in Palma. While moving, it collided with an oil tanker in the same port of the capital of the Balearic Islands. Six people were slightly injured in the incident, the Balearic Islands port authority said in a statement.

In the three affected regions, streets were also flooded and trees were uprooted by wind or water.

Aena, the body responsible for Spanish airports, reported the cancellation of 24 flights and the rerouting of 29 of them coming from the Balearic Islands.

This meteorological episode, accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature, comes Thursday after the end, on Thursday, of the fourth heat wave of this boreal summer in Spain.
