Tropical storm Idalia formed on Sunday in Caribbean waters near the southeast of Mexico, an area with important tourist spots, where it brought strong winds and precipitation, the United States National Hurricane Center reported.
At 8:00 p.m. (Paris time) Idalia was 135 kilometers east of the Mexican island of Cozumel, with sustained winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour, and was advancing north at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour, according to the NHC.
“A more rapid northward motion is expected on Monday, which will carry the storm into the eastern Gulf of Mexico,” it added.
heavy rains
An NHC map projecting Idalia’s track shows that it will not approach Mexican territory but is expected to reach northwestern Florida in the southeastern United States on Wednesday, where it will have become a hurricane.
Rains, winds and strong waves are forecast for the next few hours in this state as well as in neighboring Yucatan and Campeche, warned the National Meteorological Service of Mexico.
The previous weekend, Hurricane Hilary, which reached category 4 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale (between 210 and 250 km/h), hit the Mexican state of Baja California (northwest), on the Pacific coast, causing one death and damaging infrastructure, before entering American territory.
Mexico is hit by hurricanes on its Pacific and Atlantic coasts each year, generally between May and November.
