At least 21 people have died in three days in Tajikistan as torrential rains triggered landslides, flooding and rockfalls, local authorities said on Wednesday.
“There are 21 dead” in three cities in central Tajikistan, close to the capital, Dushanbe, a spokesman for the committee for emergency situations in Tajikistan told the AFP agency today.
According to the official, 17 people died in Vakhdat, two in Roudaki and two in Varzob, three towns located on the outskirts of Dushanbe, the capital of this country of ten million inhabitants.
On Monday, the emergency situations committee reported 13 deaths from torrential rains and warned of the high risk of new landslides, rockfalls and flooding.
Tajikistan, a poor and mountainous country, is regularly beset by deadly natural disasters.
In February, 19 people died from avalanches in the country.
