British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, who announced in July that he would step down at the next government reshuffle, has formally tendered his resignation, the prime minister’s office reported Thursday.
In a letter to Wallace, 53, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the “dedication” the now-resigned ruler has shown in taking a leading role in supporting Ukraine’s Western allies against Russia. “He served the country with distinction,” Sunak stressed, praising his “clairvoyance and strategic vision.”
Ben Wallace was a member of the British government for nine years, four of which were responsible for the defense portfolio.
“I was elected deputy in 2005 and after so many years the time has come to devote myself to the aspects of life I have neglected and to explore new opportunities,” he wrote. in his letter of resignation, published by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office, which is expected to announce the name of his successor soon.

In the letter, Wallace praised the British response to the war in Ukraine and thanked Sunak for his investment in the army and for his “friendship”, adding: “You and the government will have my continued support”.
