Turkish President in Russia to meet Vladimir Putin

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Sochi, Russia, on Monday, where he will meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

According to the Ankara press, the Turkish head of state hopes at the Sochi meeting to “convince” the Russian president to resume the agreement on Ukrainian cereal exports, which Moscow abandoned last July.

Erdogan’s trip to Russia and his meeting with Vladimir Putin was first reported last week.

Erdogan, who will speak before the meeting, will meet his Russian counterpart for the first time since last October.

The President of Turkey is traveling accompanied by the Ankara Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Finance and Energy.

In July, Russia withdrew from the agreement allowing the transport of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, crucial to the world’s food supply, claiming that Western sanctions were hampering the international market for its own agricultural products and fertilizers.

Moscow has threatened to attack ships sailing from Ukrainian Black Sea ports and has intensified shelling of Ukrainian port infrastructure.
