Candidates have already voted: Lula wants ‘happy’ Brazil to recover and Bolsonaro talks about clean elections

Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro have already voted in Brazil’s elections next Sunday.

The candidate and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) voted in the morning in São Bernardo do Campo, the city that is his political birthplace, in the metropolis of São Paulo, later confirmed that Brazil “must regain the right to be happy”.

The current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has voted in Rio de Janeiro, where he emphasized popular support during the election campaign and spoke again about the need for “clean elections”.

In second place in the polls, Bolsonaro has questioned the reliability of the electoral system, leading him to fear he will not accept an eventual defeat to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “So many people on the street who support us, unfortunately they have not seen it in the press. It is part of the rules of the game. What matters is Datapovo. Clean elections? No problem. May the best win,” Bolsonaro said on Sunday.

Lula da Silva, leader in the voting intention polls, voted along with his vice presidential candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, his wife, sociologist Rosângela da Silva, the PT president, Gleisi Hoffmann, and the PT candidate for the government of São Paulo. Fernando Haddad.

With a chance of winning in the first round, Lula da Silva has between 50% and 51% of the voting intentions, according to polls released Saturday. by DataFolha and Ipec respectively, and is followed by current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, with 36% and 37% of the voting intentions, Ciro Gomes (5% in both polls) and Simone Tebet (6% and 5%).

After the vote, the Workers’ Party (PT) candidate kissed the ballot paper and left the room. In statements to journalists, he defended that Brazil “must regain the right to be happy”: “We want a country that lives in peace, with hope and that believes in the future”.

Lula stated that these will be the “most important” elections for him, after serving for two terms, between 2003 and 2010. “In 2018 I could not vote because I was in prison, victim of a lie, and four years later I I vote in recognition of my total freedom and the opportunity to be president of this country again and return to normalcy,” he added. The PT candidate spent 580 days in jail for two corruption charges, which were later overturned by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The more than 156 million voters can vote in Brasília until 5 p.m. (9 p.m. in Lisbon), in the 577,125 electronic voting machines spread over 5,570 cities in the country.

In addition to Lula da Silva and Bolsonaro, the candidates Ciro Gomes, Simone Tebet, Luís Felipe D’Ávila, Soraya Tronicke, Eymael, Father Kelmon, Leonardo Pericles, Sofia Manzano and Vera Lúcia are competing for the Brazilian presidential election.

If none of the presidential candidates gets more than 50% of the valid votes, the two most voted candidates will face each other again on October 30 in a runoff election.
