Trump ally tried for obstructing investigation into Capitol attack

Peter Navarro, former economic advisor and ally of former United States President Donald Trump, was found guilty this Thursday of obstruction of power, after refusing to cooperate with the congressional commission that investigated the attack on the Capitol.

Judge Amit Mehta set Navarro’s sentencing date for January 12, 2024.

Another former advisor to Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, had already been sentenced to four months in prison for the same crimes in 2022, but appealed.

Peter Navarro was found guilty of refusing, in 2022, to appear and provide documents to the House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021.

That day, hundreds of Donald Trump’s supporters invaded the Capitol, seat of the US Congress, in an attempt to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

As soon as he left the court, Navarro announced his intention to appeal, arguing that “a senior White House advisor could not be forced to testify before Congress,” under penalty of violating the executive and legislative “separation of powers.”

Trump’s former economic adviser could be sentenced to between 30 days and a year in prison, in addition to facing a fine of up to $100,000.

The investigative commission recommended on January 6, 2021, in its report published in December 2022, after 18 months of work, the opening of criminal proceedings against Donald Trump, in particular for calling for rebellion and conspiracy against institutions. Americans.

The former Republican president was indicted in August by a federal court in Washington and then by the courts of the state of Georgia (southeast), for his allegedly illicit attempts to obtain the reversal of the results of the 2020 elections.
