6.9 magnitude earthquake shakes Morocco and is felt in Portugal

An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shook Morocco late this Friday. With its epicenter in Marrakech, the earthquake was felt in several locations in Portugal, without damage being reported, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The earthquake, which occurred at 11:11 p.m., was recorded at the stations of the National Seismic Network and the epicenter is located approximately 65 km southwest of Maraquexé.

According to the IPMA, the earthquake, “so far, has not caused personal or material damage and was felt with maximum intensity III/IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Castro Marim, Faro, Loulé, Portimão, Vila Real de Santo António (Faro), Cascais, Lisbon, Torres Vedras, Vila Franca de Xira (Lisbon), Almada, Setúbal and Sines (Setúbal)”.

“It was also felt with less intensity in the municipalities of Coimbra (Coimbra), Albufeira, Olhão, Silves (Faro), Alenquer, Loures, Mafra, Oeiras, Sintra, Amadora, Odivelas (Lisbon), Santo Tirso, Vila Nova de Gaia. (Porto), Santiago do Cacém, Seixal and Sesimbra (Setúbal), says IPMA.

According to Moroccan media, the earthquake caused many people to take to the streets of Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech and Agadir and telephone lines were cut.

A second tremor of magnitude 4.9 was recorded northeast of Taroudant (200 kilometers south of Marrakech) around 11:30 p.m. Lisbon time.

There are also records of three more earthquakes in the region, with measured magnitudes of 3.3, 3.1 and 3.3, the most recent of them at 00:19 this Saturday, Lisbon time.
