The Pope expresses “deep solidarity” with the Moroccan people

This Saturday, Pope Francis expressed in a telegram sent to Morocco his “deep solidarity” with Moroccans, affected by a strong earthquake that caused at least 820 deaths and 672 injuries, of which 250 were serious.

“The Pope expresses his deep solidarity with those who are affected in the flesh and in the heart by this tragedy,” wrote, on behalf of the leader of the Catholic Church, the Secretary of State and “number 2” of the Vatican, Pietro Parolín.

In the message, written in French (a language spoken in Morocco) and sent to local authorities, Francis asks God “to support Moroccans in this difficult trial and offer his encouragement to civil authorities and rescue services” and ” “Pray for the rest of the dead, for the healing of the wounded and for the consolation of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones and their homes.”

The most recent toll from the earthquake that shook Morocco on Friday night amounted to 820 dead and 672 injured, of which 250 were seriously injured, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior announced today.

According to the National Institute of Geophysics of Morocco, the earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale and occurred in the Marrakech region (north) at 11:11 p.m. local time (same time in Lisbon), at a depth of eight kilometers.

The epicenter occurred in the town of Ighil, located about 80 kilometers southwest of Marrakech.

The strong earthquake was felt in Portugal and Spain.
