More than 70 crocodiles escaped from a farm in southeastern China due to heavy rains that hit the region, local authorities reported today, recommending residents stay home.
According to the Chinese press, 69 adult crocodiles and six hatchlings escaped in Maoming, a coastal city in Guangdong province, bordering Macau and Hong Kong.
To date, no injuries have been reported.
Authorities said some of the crocodiles were captured, but the operation is being hampered by the depth of the lake in which the crocodiles are located, according to local media.
Further west, seven people died and three were missing after several landslides in the city of Yulin in the Guangxi region, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Heavy rains on Sunday and Monday caused landslides.
Last week, rains caused flash flooding in Hong Kong, killing two people.
