Russia accuses Kiev of attacking the city where the Zaporijia nuclear power plant is located

The director of Russian nuclear company Rosatom, Alexei Liyachev, accused Ukrainian authorities on Tuesday of launching a drone attack on the town of Energodar, in Ukraine’s Zaporijia region, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

“Yesterday [segunda-feira] there were several drone attacks on Energodar territory. Two devices were neutralized and four others launched attacks,” Likhachev said.quoted by the Interfax agency.

The attacks, he added, caused no deaths or injuries.

For the director of the state nuclear company, this is Kiev’s ‘response’ to the Russian-organized elections in the four regions annexed to Ukraine in September 2022, including Zaporijia.

“I understand it was a response to the elections. The elections in Energodar were more active than in the rest of the Zaporijia region, judging by the results of the United Russia party, hence the pressure.” he said.

According to Russian election authorities, the Kremlin party, United Russia, won more than 80% of the vote in Zaporijia.

The preliminary results were released at a time when Russian authorities are trying to consolidate control over areas that Moscow illegally annexed a year ago and that the country still does not fully control.

Voting for Russian-installed parliaments began last week and, according to the Central Election Commission, deputies from the ruling United Russia party came first in the four Ukrainian regions annexed last year – Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporijia – and in Crimea -peninsula. that the Kremlin annexed in 2014.

The vote in the occupied territories of Ukraine was denounced by Kiev and the West as a sham and a violation of international law.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, which started on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945) and caused a large number of casualties over the past eighteen months. only soldiers, but also civilians, impossible to count as long as the conflict continues.
