Bosnian police arrest five people accused of genocide in Srebrenica in 1995

On Tuesday, Bosnian police arrested five people suspected of involvement in a 1995 genocide in Srebrenica, the town where Bosnian Serb troops killed more than 8,000 men and boys during the ethnic war in the Balkans.

Police also carried out searches and seizures during the operation, which took place in several cities in the Republika Srpska, a Serb-administered entity that covers about half of Bosnia’s territory, the State Investigation and Investigation Agency said in a statement. Protection of Bosnia.

Bosnian news portal Klix also said the detained people are former Bosnian Serb army officers and soldiers who allegedly helped capture and kill nearly 70 men and boys and one woman during the Srebrenica massacre.

Most of the thousands of victims of the massacre were Bosnians, a largely Muslim ethnic group, and the United Nations declared the brutal executions that took place in the final days of the Bosnian war (1992-1995) an act of genocide.

However, the Bosnian Serbs refused to recognize the magnitude of the crime.

Although several decades have passed since the massacre, remains of the victims continue to be unearthed in mass graves around Srebrenica, where Bosnian Serb troops attempted to conceal the murders.

The Bosnian conflict ended with a US-brokered peace agreement in late 1995, which created two entities: the Serb-dominated Republika Srpska and a Bosnian-Croat Republic.

Bosnia’s two autonomous regions have an uneasy connection, created through joint institutions, but ethnic tensions and the Serb push to break away from the joint state with Bosniaks and Croats continue to plague the country.

Bosnian Serb nationalist leader Milorad Dodik has faced sanctions from the United States and the United Kingdom for his separatist policies, but has the support of Russia, fueling Western fears of instability.
