The United Nations Migration Agency stated this Wednesday that there are at least 30,000 people displaced in the city of Derna, in eastern Libya, after floods that caused thousands of deaths.
“There are at least 30,000 displaced people” in Derna, said the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in a report on the situation in eastern Libya after the passage of Storm Daniel in the early hours of Monday.
According to emergency services, at least 2,300 people died in the floods that devastated the city of Derna.
The spokesman for the Libyan Emergency and Rescue Service of the internationally recognized government of Tripoli, Oussama Ali, told Agence France Presse that the floods caused by Storm Daniel left “more than 2,300 dead” and around 7,000 injured in Derna, while More than five thousand people are lost.
Most of the areas affected by bad weather are in eastern Libya, controlled by the Benghazi government, which does not enjoy international recognition.
