Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, was charged this Thursday with a federal firearms charge, the most important step so far in a lengthy investigation of which he is the subject.
Hunter Biden is accused of lying about his drug use when he purchased a firearm in October 2018, during which time he acknowledged that he was struggling with a crack addiction, according to the indictment filed in federal court in Delaware.
President Joe Biden’s son is also under investigation for his businesses and the special prosecutor handling the case reported that charges could still be filed for failure to pay taxes on time in Washington or California, where he resides.
The accusation comes at a time when congressional Republicans are conducting an impeachment inquiry into the Democratic president, largely due to Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
Republicans obtained testimony about how Hunter Biden used the “Biden brand” to apply for work abroad, but they did not present concrete evidence of wrongdoing by the president.
A gun charge against Hunter Biden, 53, had previously been part of a plea deal that also included guilty pleas to lesser tax crimes, but that understanding broke down during a hearing in July when a judge raised questions about possible irregularities. procedural.
Republicans denounced the plea deal as a “good deal” for Hunter Biden to serve probation instead of actual prison time after pleading guilty to failing to pay taxes in 2017 and 2018.
Congressional Republicans continued their own investigations into the Justice Department’s handling of the case, as well as nearly every aspect of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, seeking to link his financial affairs directly to those of his father.
So far, however, Republicans have been unable to present evidence that the president was directly involved in his son’s work, although he occasionally dined with his son’s clients or greeted them through phone calls.
