NASA creates a department to study UFOs

The North American Space Agency (NASA) on Thursday announced the creation of a department to study unidentified anomalous phenomena, as they are not being adequately studied.

According to a NASA report released Thursday, the study of these phenomena will require new scientific techniques, including advanced satellites, and a change in the way they are observed.

“We will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to look for anomalies in the sky and we will continue to look for habitability” on other worlds, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said at a news conference.

NASA defines unidentified anomalous phenomena (a term it prefers UFO – Unidentified Flying Object) as phenomena observed in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft, balloons or natural phenomena already known from a scientific point of view.

According to NASA, while there are numerous witness reports and images associated with the unidentified anomalous phenomena, they are not consistent or detailed enough to draw definitive scientific conclusions about their nature and origin.

The report recommends that NASA “play a leading role” in efforts to understand these phenomena, “leveraging its extensive experience,” and emphasizes that “currently, detection of unidentified anomalous phenomena is haphazard, with sensors that are not are neither designed nor calibrated for this purpose”.

On the other hand, negative perceptions about UFOs pose obstacles to data collection, said the report, conducted by an independent team of scientists and experts in aviation and artificial intelligence, based on publicly available data.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized that the agency has “no evidence” that these phenomena “have an extraterrestrial origin” and promised that the agency will share the collected data “transparently with the entire world.”
