Diana’s black sheep sweater reaches record price at princess clothing auction

A red wool sweater with a black sheep, which Princess Diana wore in 1981, was auctioned on Thursday for around 1 million euros, a new record for sales of Lady Di clothes.

This garment also became the most valuable at auction, confirmed to Efe the auction house Sotheby’s, which carried out the sale.

Princess Diana of Wales wore this shirt during a polo match for the then Prince Charles, now King, in June 1981, a month before the wedding.

The piece from the British brand Warm & Wonderful received a total of 44 bids, ultimately multiplying the final price, estimated at 80 thousand dollars (about 75 thousand euros), by 14.

The auction was active from August 31 to September 14.

Also this Thursday, a black and white dress worn by the Princess of Wales, designed by Murray Arbeid, which was worn twice by ‘Lady Di’ in 1985, was sold for 380 thousand dollars (about 357 thousand euros).

Its first use was to celebrate Prince Edward’s 21st birthday at the Midsummer Night Ball in June and then at the Worshipfull Company of Fanmakers banquet in December.

In January, Sotheby’s auctioned the purple velvet “Infanta-style” ball gown designed by Victor Edelstein for $604,800 (about 568,000 euros).

Diana died in Paris in 1997, at the age of 36, when the car she was driving with her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed, and the driver crashed into a concrete pillar in the tunnel she was driving through while being chased. by photographers in cars and motorcycles.

A British inquest concluded that the accident was the result of the negligent behavior of the pursuing vehicles and the driver’s high alcohol level.

The auction also included the dress worn by Kate Winslet to the 1998 Oscars, when she was nominated for best actress for her role in the film Titanic, and a dress worn by former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama at a charity event, including more other clothes.

The first was auctioned for 12,700 dollars (approximately 12,000 euros) and the second for 9,525 dollars (approximately 8,950 euros).
