Tens of thousands of protesters, shouting that the future depends on ending the use of fossil fuels, began protests on Sunday that will accompany world leaders throughout the week as they seek to adopt measures to curb climate change.
Protesters say the measures are not enough and, directing their ire directly at the US president, have urged him to stop approving new oil and gas projects, phase out current ones and declare a climate emergency.
“If you want to win [nas eleições] In 2024, if you don’t want the blood of my generation on your hands, get rid of fossil fuels,” said Emma Buretta, 17, of the youth protest group Fridays for Future.
On Broadway, protesters filled the streets, pleading for a better future, in a protest that kicked off New York Climate Week, where world leaders from business, politics and the arts gather this week to try to save the planet, in particular a new special event from the United States. Nations Summit on Wednesday.
However, the leaders of some of the countries causing the most pollution and carbon emissions will not be present at the United Nations meeting, hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, nor will they hear the protesters’ call.
Organizers estimated that 75,000 people participated in Sunday’s march.
Protest organizers emphasized how disappointed they were that Biden, whom many of them supported in 2020, would allow greater oil and fossil fuel extraction.
Over the past 100 years, the United States has emitted more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any other country, although that spot now belongs to China.
“We need to phase out fossil fuels for our planet to survive,” said Jean Su, march organizer and director of the Center for Biological Diversity.
