A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Italy

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook north of Florence, Italy, this Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake was recorded at 5:10 local time (4:10 in Lisbon) and the epicenter was located at a depth of 8.4 kilometers, near Marradi, a city of about three thousand inhabitants, about 42 kilometers north of Florence.

So far no injuries have been reported, but firefighters are still inspecting several homes.

“There is a lot of concern. All the people are in the streets, but no concrete damage has been reported,” said the mayor, Tommaso Triberti, quoted by the AFP news agency.

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, in the cities of Marradi, Borgo San Lorenzo and Firenzuola, schools have closed as a precaution and some train connections are experiencing interruptions in service.

About 30 minutes earlier, in a neighboring area, in Mugello, the Italian seismic network recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 and, subsequently, another 25 small earthquakes were also recorded, between 2.8 and 1.1 on the magnitude scale. Richter.

In 2019, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Mugello, causing minor damage and causing a crack in the façade of a 17th-century church. The same city was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1919, one of the worst of the century, which killed about 100 people.
