London’s Metropolitan Police announced on Monday that they had received a complaint of alleged sexual abuse against Russell Brand, following the… average allegations about the British comedian and actor.
A joint investigation by The Times, Sunday Times and television station Channel 4, published on Saturday, reveals allegations from four women accusing Brand of alleged rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse.
Russell Brand, 48, vehemently denied the allegations, which are alleged to have taken place between 2003 and 2013, in a video statement released on Friday evening. He stated that their relationships were always “consensual”, even during a period when he admitted to being “very, very promiscuous”.
The Times and Sunday Times revealed this Monday that more women have made themselves available to report on the comedian’s behavior since the early 2000s, but no further details were given.
The revelations against Brand come as criticism mounts over the way sexual assault cases are handled in the British criminal justice system, as well as the way social media groups have handled similar allegations of inappropriate behavior by public figures.
In a short statement said The London Metropolitan Police stated that “on Sunday 17 September” they had received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred in Soho, central London, in 2003.
“Police officers are in contact with the woman and will support her,” he added.
The police said it had been in contact with newspapers and Channel 4 documentary makers “to ensure that anyone who believes they have been the victim of a sexual crime knows how to report it to the police”.
The BBC and Channel 4, as well as a production company, have launched an investigation into allegations of sexual assault.
“Very serious and worrying” allegations, says British Prime Minister
This is evident from research by average, Brand allegedly raped a woman in his Los Angeles home. Another woman claims he abused her during a three-month relationship when she was 16 and still in school.
Number 10 Downing Street urged broadcasters to present the results of ongoing investigations into Brand in a “transparent” way.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman, Rishi Sunak, called the allegations “very serious and concerning”, adding that the head of government has “made it clear that there should never be any room for intimidation”.
Publisher Bluebird announced that “all future publications” by the comedian have been suspended.
Following the allegations, Brand’s comedy show, which was due to take place in London on Tuesday, has been postponed, the Theater Royal Windsor, west of the capital, announced today.
Brand rose to international fame as the ex-husband of pop star Katy Perry after starting a career as a stand-up comedian, much of which involved drugs and sex.
He moved on to reality television, playing rock star Aldous Snow in the 2008 film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek.”
In recent years, he has been accused of being a conspiracy theorist after using his YouTube channel to poll his nearly seven million followers about the Covid-19 pandemic. It argued that the pandemic was exaggerated and exploited by a global elite to impose radical social change.
