Poll gives Lula victory in second round presidential election

The first poll regarding the second round of the Brazilian presidential election (scheduled for October 30), conducted by IPEC (Intelligence in Strategic Research and Consulting), gives the victory to Lula da Silva, with 51% of the voting intentions, with Jair Bolsonaro registered 43%.

The margin of error established for this study is two percentage points. Voters who said they would vote blank made up 4% of respondents, while 2% didn’t know or didn’t respond.

If only valid votes are considered (excluding indications of blank or invalid votes and undecided voters), Lula has 55% of the voting intentions and Bolsonaro 45%. The current president’s performance is the best in the campaign phase, which began on August 16.

For this study, 2000 people were interviewed in 129 municipalities between 3 and 5 October. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points, with a 95% confidence level.

Lula da Silva was the most voted candidate in Sunday’s 2nd election in Brazil, with 48.43% of the vote, but failed to win the first round, leaving a sense of frustration on the Brazilian left. Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right candidate, took 43.20% of the vote and, even at a disadvantage, achieved a record higher than predicted by major polls.

The first called the results “extension”. The second, preserving the sporting metaphor, spoke of “the beginning of the second half”. Overtime or second half is the 30th.
