Five Bulgarian citizens have been charged in Britain with spying for Russia

On Thursday, British justice indicted five Bulgarian citizens accused of conspiracy for allegedly spying for the Russian government during the invasion of Ukraine.

The defendants were identified as Orlin Roussev, Bizer Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov and Vania Gaberova and are due to appear at the Westminster Court of First Instance in London on Thursday.

They were all charged with conspiring to gather information that “could be useful to the enemy,” prosecutors from the Public Prosecution Service told the BBC public television channel. Such activities will be carried out between August 2020 and February this year.

British justice suspects that the five Bulgarian citizens worked for a spy cell of the Russian secret service and carried out surveillance missions on their alleged targets. They will all have worked in Britain and then passed on the information collected to the Russian state.

Roussev, 45, played the role of ‘liaison’ between suspected spies and Moscow’s secret services. British security forces found fake passports and identity documents from at least nine countries.
