The President of the Republic meets this Friday with the Portuguese community in New Jersey

The President of the Republic will meet this Friday with the community of Portuguese emigrants in the state of New Jersey, on the fifth and last day of a visit to the United States of America to participate in the 78th session of the General Assembly of the ONU.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be with Portuguese and emigrants of Portuguese descent in two cities in the American state of New Jersey, Elizabeth and Newark, before traveling tonight back to Portugal, where he will arrive on Saturday morning.

The head of state already met with the Portuguese community in Newark in 2016 and in 2021, when he decorated the centenary Sport Club Português.

Today’s program of the President of the Republic also includes a visit to a cafe in Manhattan, New York, by a Portuguese-American businessman who sells cream pastries.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in the United States of America on Sunday night to participate in the annual general debate between heads of State and Government of the 193 member countries of the United Nations (UN).

In his speech on Tuesday, he called on world leaders to move from promises to action on reform of the UN, particularly its Security Council, and global financial institutions, and argued that Ukraine’s fight against The Russian invasion is inseparable from respect for the United Nations. Letter.

During this week, the head of state met with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and spoke at summits on sustainable development and climate and in an open debate at the UN Security Council on Ukraine.

The President of the Republic traveled to the United States of America from Canada, where he made a five-day official visit dedicated to the Portuguese communities of that country, spending a total of ten days outside of Portugal.

On Thursday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met with the community of Portuguese emigrants from New York State, in Tarrytown.

In New York, both the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, held bilateral meetings to, among other objectives, promote Portugal’s candidacy for a place as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2027-2028 biennium.
