Hungarian PM asks Sweden for “respect” before ratifying NATO membership

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, guaranteed this Monday that his Government is in no hurry to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO, a country for which it demands greater respect.

“There is no rush. Nothing endangers Sweden’s security,” said Orbán, in a session in the Hungarian Parliament.

Orbán also referred to a documentary series produced in Sweden in 2019 that criticized the loss of democratic values in Hungary, and stated that his country demands respect from Sweden as a prior step to deciding whether to allow it to join NATO.

Orbán’s party, Fidesz, announced last week that it did not agree to give the green light to Sweden’s accession to NATO because this process “caused consternation” among the deputies of this political organization.

Hungary and Turkey are the only two NATO countries that have not yet ratified Sweden’s membership in the Alliance, having given the green light to another of the Nordic countries, Finland, to join the organization.

Hungary has been postponing the corresponding vote in Parliament for several months and the issue of ratification has been on the agenda of plenary sessions several times.
