On Thursday, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 24 children, in a murderous journey that began at a daycare center in Nong Bua Lamphu, Thailand. Some people miraculously survived the killings, including a three-year-old girl whose story was told by the BBC.
Emmy was napping with her classmates that day when the attack occurred. She was later found awake, among the bodies of her murdered comrades. According to information from the BBC, she was the only girl who was found alive after the attack on the nursery.
“She thought her friends were still sleeping. A policeman covered her face with a cloth and took out all the blood,” her grandfather, Somsak Srithong, 59, told the British channel. “She had no idea what was going on when she woke up.”
“She is too young to understand the concept of death.”
“I am very grateful that she survived. I hugged her so tightly when I first saw her,” says Somsak Srithong.
Emmy’s family says they struggled to figure out how to explain to the girl why she was no longer going to school and could no longer see some of her friends, who unfortunately died in the attack. The little girl’s grandmother ended up explaining to her that her classmates had died, as well as her mistress, and that the nursery was closed.
“She wants to go to school every day. We have to keep telling her that school is closed,” says her mother, “she’s too young to understand the concept of death.”
This so far uneventful rural district of Thailand watched helplessly as one of the kingdom’s worst massacres. Symbol of strong emotion, King Maha Vajiralongkorn went there on Friday night. The assailant committed suicide.
