Russian President Vladimir Putin increased his salary by 5.5% on Tuesday and also increased the salaries of the country’s top officials, despite the economic fallout from the invasion of Ukraine.
The presidential decree increases from October 1 the salaries of the Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, as well as the deputy head of the Security Council and the former Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, one of the biggest enthusiasts of the current military campaign.
Ministers, heads of some government structures and some federal employees will also see their salaries increase.
In addition, Putin issued separate decrees on salary increases for the Prosecutor General, Igor Krasnov, and the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexandr Bastrikin, which is investigating alleged war crimes committed by the Ukrainian military.
According to the economic newspaper RBC, the government will not index the salaries of Russian civil servants in 2024.
On the other hand, the salaries of employees of public enterprises will be increased by 4.5% from October 1, and those of employees in the health, social, education and cultural sectors by 9.8% from the same date.
The independent press believes that the salary increases are intended to guarantee support in the March 2024 presidential elections, in which Putin is likely to run for another term.
