WHO concerned about the evolution of Covid-9 as winter approaches

The World Health Organization (WHO) admitted this Wednesday its concern about the evolution of Covid-19, as winter approaches in the northern hemisphere, at a time when the number of serious cases and hospitalizations has increased.

“Among the relatively few countries that report, both hospitalizations and intensive care admissions have increased in the last 28 days, especially in Europe and America,” said the director general of the WHO this Wednesday at a press conference.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus considered that less than two years after the world found itself at the peak of the pandemic, vaccination levels among the most vulnerable groups remain very low.

Two-thirds of the world’s population are fully vaccinated and only one-third have received at least one booster dose.

“Covid-19 may no longer be the acute crisis it was two years ago, but that does not mean we can ignore it,” said Tedros Ghebreyesus.

According to the head of the WHO’s anti-Covid technical department, Maria Von Kerkhove, the data available to scientists to control the circulation of the virus is increasingly scarce because countries are reducing monitoring.

It is known, however, that the subvariants currently in circulation are related to the Ómicron variant, without any being clearly dominant.
