Two dead in shooting in the center of Marseille

Two people died Thursday night in the city center of Marseille, France, after being shot by a masked man who fled.

The man got out of a car holding a Kalashnikov pistol and shot three people walking down the street, two of them died and the shooter fled in a car with fake license plates, which was later found on fire.

The city’s police chief, Frédérique Camilleri, declared this Friday on BFMTV television that this is a “settling of scores” between drug trafficking groups operating in Marseille.

Camilleri acknowledged that in recent months violent acts linked to drug trafficking have increased in the city.

“The settling of scores knows no limits between drug trafficking groups,” he said, adding that the police closed several drug sales points in the city, which intensified the rivalry.

“The work we do will take time, but we will face it with determination. We want to show them that we will not stop,” said Camilleri.

According to Camilleri, in the last three years 400 police officers arrived in the city and another 70 are expected in the coming months.
