Russian divers examine the Crimean bridge after the explosion

This symbolic and strategic infrastructure for Russia was damaged this Saturday by a powerful explosion, followed by a fire.

Russian divers examine this Sunday, from the sea, the Crimean Bridge, a key infrastructure that links Russia with this annexed peninsula, damaged the day before by a powerful explosion that the authorities attributed to a truck bomb.

“We have ordered an examination by our divers. They will start work at six in the morning,” Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khousnulline announced on Saturday night.

According to him, the “first results” of this underwater examination are expected on Sunday.

traffic has resumed

Car and rail traffic resumed this Saturday a few hours after the explosion that threw one of the tracks of this bridge, built at great expense and inaugurated by Vladimir Putin in 2018, into the sea.

The Russian Transport Ministry said on Sunday that passenger trains from Crimea to Russia were “running according to the usual plan”. Ferries have also been established between mainland Russia and the peninsula.

“A healthy desire for revenge”

Russian authorities blamed the blast, which killed three people on Saturday morning, on a truck bomb owned by a resident of Russia’s Krasnodar region. Moscow did not immediately blame Ukraine for the attack and Ukrainian officials did not formally claim responsibility.

However, Kyiv had repeatedly threatened to attack this bridge, a symbol of Crimea’s annexation in 2014, which is also used to supply Russian troops in Ukraine.

Crimean leader Sergei Aksionov on Sunday called on residents of the peninsula to remain “calm” and said the situation was “under control.” He added, however, “of course there are emotions and a healthy desire for revenge.”
