The Chief of the General Staff of the Romanian Army, General Daniel Petrescu, stated this Friday that the Russian war in Ukraine is destabilizing the Black Sea region, accusing Moscow of blocking the GPS signal in Romanian territorial waters.
According to Ukraine’s national news agency Ukrinform, citing the Romania Journal newspaper, General Petrescu stated that Russia “actively and constantly” blocks GPS (navigation system) communications of ships in Romanian territorial waters, causing the risk of collisions. and he argued that Romania and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Western defense bloc) should prepare for a long-term confrontation with President Vladimir Putin’s regime.
“We do not see this war ending now and, while we admire the resilience of Ukrainian society in the face of Russian attacks, we must also prepare for a long-term confrontation with the regime of the Russian Federation,” said Petrescu, in a speech at the Forum for Euro-Atlantic Resilience, organized in Bucharest by the Euro-Atlantic Center for Resilience.
“There is a constant risk associated with the increasing probability of incidents occurring on the NATO border, due to the possibility of failure of some ‘drones’ (unmanned aircraft) or missiles: Romania’s infrastructure or commercial ships in territorial waters [da Roménia] can be hit by mistake,” he said.
Another danger highlighted by the chief of staff of the Romanian army is sea mines adrift in the Black Sea.
